Jim Nygaard is a Managing Director at XMS Capital Partners and is responsible for leading all M&A execution activities at the firm. He is also a key member of the firm’s Fairness Committee which is responsible for reviewing all valuation related opinions or similar analysis. Based in Chicago, Jim joined XMS in 2008 following a 12-year period at Morgan Stanley. With 22 years of investment banking experience, he has completed several strategic transactions, financings and corporate finance advisory assignments for a diverse range of clients in a variety of industry sectors.
Jim began his career at Morgan Stanley in the mid-90’s as a financial analyst in the investment banking division of the firm’s Chicago office. During his tenure at Morgan Stanley, he assumed various roles within the corporate finance and M&A practices of the firm. In 1999, he was selected to participate in the firm’s “Accelerated Career Path” program and was promoted directly to an associate position without attending business school. In 2001, Jim was selected to be the administrative associate of the investment banking division in New York. In this firm management role, he assisted the global head of investment banking, leading a variety of strategic and administrative projects for the division.
As an officer in Morgan Stanley’s Chicago office, Jim led coverage and strategic execution efforts for a number of diverse, Midwest-based companies, including 3M, Anheuser-Busch, ConAgra Foods, Ford Motor Company, General Mills, W.W. Grainger and Hospira. Prior to joining XMS, he was a senior member of Morgan Stanley’s Midwest M&A execution practice.
Jim graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor’s degree in economics and an academic concentration in financial accounting in the university’s business school. He was valedictorian of his department and received Bronze Tablet Honors, the university’s highest academic distinction.
